The world, for almost the past two decades, has become highly aware and concerned about health and environmental issues. Though people were concerned about such issues earlier as well, they definitely lacked the means of raising their voice in this regard. With social media becoming one of the most influential tools in educating people, the advocates of organic have become very active in this dominion and quite rightly so, because there is no reason to doubt the accessibility and effectiveness of this medium.

So, what exactly is it about this organic food?

Organic Versus Chemical

Well, in the simplest scientific explanation, any food substances that are carbon based, which are known to be the basic building block of life, are referred as being organic. Many carbon compounds that are human-made, or synthetic are organic compounds too. Plastics are organic, and so are most synthetic wonder drugs, as far as chemists are concerned.

So a Chemist would even say most of the synthetic fertilizers, the ones that “organic” gardeners don’t use, are organic too. This is because synthetic fertilizers are made of molecules that are made of mostly carbon atoms. By this definition, almost everything that we consume as food is technically organic.

He needs to stay away from using in his soil any petroleum based fertilizers or any other material that is chemically altered. To make it easily understandable, compost and manure are to be resorted to as natural fertilizers, but Miracle-Gro is to be totally avoided.

As a matter of fact, the use of chemicals is unacceptable even for disease and pest control. When treatment is needed, the farmer is expected to treat the crops with insecticidal soap as well as Neem oil, but the store-brought chemical based sprays are prohibited when it comes to organic.

Organic food has to be all natural and totally free of any kind of genetic alteration. Instead of achieving the desired results through unnatural ways, organic produce requires resorting to conventional hand pollination and selective breeding procedures.

The GMO foods (genetically modified) are known to have gone through some tempering at a genetic level. For example, in order to produce higher yields or making the crops drought resistant, the genetics of GMO food products are tempered with, which makes it devoid of organic certification.

As a matter of fact, it is not only about how organic produce is farmed; one also needs to make sure that organic food does not come into contact with non-organic food. For that, one also needs to ensure separate packaging and shipment of organic food, avoiding any contact with any types of chemical ingredients at any level. People advocating organic produce not only recommend it for its chemical free nature, but they also deem it as more nutritious and tasty, as also backed up by the results of several studies and researches taken in this regard.

For instance, a study conducted at the Newcastle University, United Kingdom reported a boast of about 40% in various nutrients (such as zinc, iron, as well as vitamin C) in organic produce compared to inorganic produce.

Though there is ample room of further research in the domain of organic versus chemical, one cannot deny various health benefits resulting from following natural ways and staying away from chemicals and any genetic modifications.

Environmental health involves controlling or preventing disease, disability, and injury related to the interactions between the environment and people.

Adverse solid waste material vastly affects the quality of life, resulting in various hindrances in living a healthy and long life, while also making the quality of life in some areas unbearable.

2020 Healthy People Environmental Health Objectives
The 2020 Healthy People Environmental Health Objectives focus on those areas that highlight some elements of environmental health. These consist of air quality outdoors; toxic substances and hazardous wastes; and ground and surface water quality, as well as other elements needed for a healthy environment that promotes a long life.

Quality of Air
When we think of the surroundings and sustainability, air quality is a natural consideration. The air quality touches numerous parts of the ecosystem globally including water, soil, wildlife, vegetation, and human life. In one-way or another, all living things depend on the air around us.

2012 Outdoor Pollution

There are many companies that do not safely dispose of their toxic waste, contaminating entire communities they are located in. This results in many quality of life issues including early onset of cancers and other health problems, especially in the very young and the very old.

Ground and Surface Waters
The quality of ground and surface water possibly has the largest effect on long life – not so much in the United States, but certainly in underdeveloped countries where drinking water is polluted and babies and children often get sick and die from the quality of the water.

Surface water can become stagnant and polluted simply by not having a method to flow and take out many elements of solid waste. Often, surface water is not a good source of potable water and can harm animals, plants, and humans. In many areas of the world, water out of the ground is pumped out, so people can use it for bathing, drinking, and well as other uses in a household, industry and agriculture.

Healthy Environment and A Long LifeAdditionally, groundwater often reaches the surface through other pathways that are natural such as springs. Groundwater that is contaminated affects the health of everything when they bathe or drink water that is contaminated or when they eat anything that has been negatively affected by contamination of groundwater. The dream of a healthy environment is simply not possible without better quality water.

Goals that need to be met
So, anything that contaminates the air, water or other areas of the environment can diminish the quality of life as well as shorten a long life. As times go on, we are contaminating more and more of our drinking water, which is the number one resource that all animals, plants, and human beings need to continue to sustain healthy growth.

The term clean environment is somewhat vague and can be interpreted in many ways. A clean environment is not only necessary for aesthetic pleasure, but is essential in sustaining human health as well.
The most widely known health impacts of the environment can be attributed to factors like pollution, climate change, ozone depletion, land degradation and the obvious loss of biodiversity. It is such factors that bring about the correlation between health issues and a clean environment.

Why look at environment and health?
There is increasing awareness that our health and the environment in which we live are closely linked, and in 2006 the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 24% of the global burden of disease was due to modifiable environmental factors. This growing awareness is reflected in recent health and environmental initiatives from governments and other organizations.

A lot has been said about the health issues brought about by poor indoor and outdoor quality, lack of sanitation, the use of hazardous chemicals and poor water quality as well. These are all factors that directly affect human health and are as a result of our poor efforts at maintaining and creating a clean environment.

Many blame the sorry state of the environment on the growing population, the projected increase from 6.8 billion to 9.2 billion by the 2050 means that we should expect worse days to come. This link between resource utilization and population is easy to follow, but is largely due to our lifestyles.

There is simply too much carbon dioxide production and this is all easily traced from sources, such as cars, detergents, pesticides, manufacturing and of course, the receding water levels.

Health and the Environment

  • While there are efforts to improve the environment, it is still shocking that preventable ailments and premature deaths still occur globally due an unclean environment and here’s proof:
  • 3 million children lose their lives every year due to diarrhea, which is brought about by unclean water and poor sanitation
  • Malaria still claims close to 3 million lives yearly
  • Acute poisoning from pesticides effects between 3.5 and 5 million people in developing countries
  • About 4 million children lose their lives to respiratory infections many of which are linked to poor indoor and outdoor air quality

While it’s clear that many of these health issues affect those in developing countries, environmental threats are everywhere and industrialization is now the major threat to a clean environment. Industrial pollution is now the leading cause of air pollution and toxic waste. In fact, statistics show that respiratory conditions, such as asthma, are becoming more prevalent in the developed world mainly due to environmental factors.

Environmental conditions that affect human health are manageable and even preventable with better environmental care and practices. A clean environment is not just the responsibility of your government, but falls upon us all. There are many advantages to having a clean environment and some of these include:

  • Less communicable diseases
  • Enhanced quality of life
  • Better food quality
  • Clean energy for future generations and more

Health and the environment affect us all, but it is the poor who are most affected and especially the children and women. While the health issues that have been brought about by global changes are quite easy to identify, many of us ignore them unless we are directly infected or affected.

Human health has always undergone threats from natural phenomena like draught, fire, flooding and others. This is however, being worsened by poor environmental management. Remember that good health and a clean environment coexist.

But there are many types of microbes that are beneficial, which are helpful, even helping us in our fight against global warming by breaking down plastics and cleaning up pollution. Someday perhaps even developing into a cure for cancer.

Beneficial Microorganisms: Bacteria or microbes are everywhere in our world, and their presence of course has an effect on the environment they are living in. These effects of microbes on our environment may be beneficial or harmful, with some having no effect on humans at all.

Beneficial Applications: Outside the body, microorganisms are used widely in various applications that are beneficial, including pest control, food, as well as symbiosis of plants and stimulation of growth.

Oil Spills: There are assorted types of bacteria that can clean up the environment when major petroleum spills happen. There is a specific strain of bacteria called Alcanivorax that will quickly increase in population whenever an oil spill offers for them, large amounts of food, and they are able to remove much of the oil from these spills.

They were at work in the Gulf of Mexico during the Deep Water Horizon spill and are probably still there to help undo the damage that was done to the Gulf. Because they are able to help in this area, they provide an effect that is beneficial to our environment. This incident brought to the attention of scientists even more beneficial microorganisms that feed on oil than originally first thought. It is estimated that the annual seepage in the Gulf of oil is 140,000 tons and these microorganisms take care of that.

Produce Electricity: There are still other forms of bacteria having tiny wire appendages referred to as nano-wires and they not only digest toxic waste including PCBs and chemical solvents, they can also produce electricity while they are digesting the toxic waste. One bacterium, called Shewanella, is a type of microorganism from the deep-sea that grows these nano-wires that seek oxygen when placed in low-oxygen environments.

Experts discovered that when the nano-wires are pricked with electrodes of platinum, they are able to carry a current. If these capabilities are harnessed effectively, they one day could be used in sewage treatment facilities to not only digest waste, but at the same time provide the power for the plant. There is currently no analytic on this form of bacteria.

Bacteria and Plastics: Non-biodegradable and far too present on our planet, plastic becomes a great problem when it comes to disposal. But in 2008, a student in Canada carried out an amazing science experiment where microorganisms were able to eat plastic. Since that time, research teams have been working on the development of this ability and how to use it to our benefit. At the University of Dublin, a professor got these bacteria to metabolize plastic bottles that were cooked down into a new type of plastic that is biodegradable.

On Their Own: In the earlier part of the year, experts discovered that beneficial microorganisms were already breaking down plastics in the world’s oceans on its own, but it has not been shown whether this will have a negative or positive effect on the environment.

Some items such as fishing line as well as plastic bags are being devoured by these bacteria; the problem is that this waste could have potential harmful effects to ecosystems in the ocean as it travels up the food chain.

These are just several different ways that microorganisms are being beneficial to our environment. However, there is a greater need of research in the area.

Microorganisms, microbes or bacteria make nutrients available in the soil for plants in a form that the plants then can use. Microbes create some of those nutrients, Mother Nature creates hers and we add the rest.

Some microbes consume nutrients and some microbes eat the microbes that have consumed the nutrients. This in turn breaks the nutrients down into a smaller form so they can be absorbed much more efficiently by the plant.

Gardens, Soil and Beneficial MicroorganismsMicrobes perform different jobs. Some defend against non-beneficial microbes and this helps keep the plant’s natural defence system at it’s best. Some microbes can also convert nitrogen gas in the air into a form that the plants can use.

Microorganisms release different types of proteins, acids, enzymes and other essential elements. These elements help to break down trace minerals, micro and macro-nutrients and make it available as food for the plant. What happens is an extreme increase in root mass, which in turn increases the nutrient intake that creates bigger yields. Enzymes and anti-microbial substances are particularly crucial in plants.

Beneficial microorganisms can also help condition and aerate soil, and create a better drainage system. Some beneficial microorganisms also have the ability to break down toxins in the soil or soil-less mix and turn it into plant food, air and water. They also covert calcium and phosphate into something that plants can actually use.

A good rule of thumb as to which microorganism is beneficial and which is not is the harmful or pathogenic microorganisms cause putrefaction and beneficial microorganisms cause fermentation.

Types of Beneficial Microorganisms:

  • Lactic acid: make lactic acid from sugars or other carbohydrates. This is an important by-product because it can act as a strong fertilizer. It will control or push down non-beneficial or harmful microbes as well as cause rapid decomposition of organic matter and ferments organic matter without the smell and other harmful outcomes.
  • Photosynthetic: these take harmful products like hydrogen sulfide and make them into useful substances. With the help of sunlight, secretions from organic matter can also be made into amino acids, nucleic acids, and bioactive substances. These aid tremendously in the growth of a plant and it’s development. Amino acids are the basic building blocks of proteins. Synthesis of new protein is what Nucleic acids are responsible for and this allows the characteristics of an organism to transfer from one generation to another. Bioactive substances are important in the regulation of the function of both plants and animals, which include hormones, enzymes, and neurotransmitters, among others.
  • Fermenting fungi: these groups of microorganisms suppress bad odors and prevent plant infestation by harmful insects and maggots. They also decompose organic matter rapidly to produce alcohol, esters and anti-microbial substances.
  • Yeasts: these create a better root system and helps with the absorption of more water and nutrients from the soil. This will in turn speed up plant growth, producing more and wider leaves so the plant will produce starch. Plants use glucose as energy; but starch can be stored more efficiently and for longer periods of time.Plants use the sun for energy so at night the plants convert the stored starch back to glucose to provide the basic energy needed to maintain basic cellular functions.

If you want to keep the populations of beneficial microorganisms healthy here is what you don’t do.

  1. Do not use chemical fertilizers: fertilizers are made up of salts, and salts suck the water out of the microbes, which will either kill them or cause them to go into a dormant state.
  2. Do not use hydrogen peroxide (H2O2): H2O2 adds oxygen to water, lowers algae levels and can help suppress diseases within plants. It helps sterilize water and the growing medium to kill harmful microorganisms, but it will also kill the beneficial microorganisms. Not good.
  3. Do not use chemical pesticides: these get sprayed onto leaves to kill harmful insects, but they also kill the beneficial microbes that are present on the leaves. The pesticides then drip off the leaves and into the soil and again, kill any beneficial microbes present in that soil or soil-less mix.
  4. Don’t walk on the soil or compact it: over-tilling and compaction can kill some beneficial microbe populations since some microbes need air to survive. Worms can do the work of turning it in for you.

Do add at least an inch of organic compost a year:  this will replenish the nutrients that the plants have used that season and handle pests with natural and organic remedies.

Beneficial microorganisms bring back the lost properties of the soil and are commonly used in natural farming and organic gardens.

You can mix up vinegar and water to make a very effective window cleaning solution and this will also work to get off rust stains, which can be left behind from planters leaning against a wall or something on your desk.

You can use all natural vegetable oil to get scuff marks off leather furniture as well which is something that everyone can agree happens to office furniture.

You can mix together a bucket of water, lemon juice and a bit of salt and use it to wash down your desk so that you can get it back to its sparkling design.

You can run your office coffee maker through with a pot of vinegar (white vinegar) and then run it through again or twice with clean water and that will get the build-up and even shine up the glass pot so that it doesn’t have a film on it.

Your office should be as naturally clean as your home and with a bit of know-how you will be able to use ingredients that you already have at home or in the office even, or you buy them inexpensively at your local grocery store.

You have done all the work to create your beautiful pond. You’ve got the correct, colorful fish and the pumps are pumping, the plants are “just so” and you start enjoying.

You then do all the right things. Add the chemicals and things recommended and one day your pond is not as clear as it was. You cannot see your fish and worse – it’s all green! Oh no!

Well, here are some no chemicals tips
for keeping a clean pond all year round that you and your fish will love!

Fish in Pond

The first point is NEVER put any chemicals what-so-ever in your pond. They damage the environment; destroy natural vegetation and they can HARM your fish! If you are currently using chemicals, it is strongly recommend that you cease using them. At the very least, they are not safe for the environment.

Use beneficial microorganisms – always – an organic pond cleaner! Some kinds of microorganisms help us, but other kinds give us trouble. Among microorganisms, there are good bacteria and there are bad bacteria. Good bacteria cleans water, produce cheese, bread etc. and are of help to our health. Bad bacteria contaminate soil, pollute water and air. They cause sickness and disease and degrade health. So, look around. Do a little research and locate some effective microorganisms that you can use in your pond. Use organic pond cleaners, your fish will love you for it.

No Ultra Violet Lights – ever. Ultra Violet light does reduce the bacteria in the pond; however, the UV cannot tell the difference between the good bacteria and the bad ones. Because of this, a UV light kills the friendly bacteria in the pond and in any beneficial microorganisms you are using – right along with the bad guys!

Use your dechlorinator. If your water is chlorinated or every time you add fresh water to your pond; dechlorinate. Chlorine is not good for the microbes in any effective organisms you use.
Plants and animals are not likely to store chlorine. However, laboratory studies show that repeat exposure to chlorine in air can affect the immune system, the blood, the heart, and the respiratory system of animals. Chlorine causes environmental harm at low levels. Chlorine is especially harmful to organisms living in water and in soil; so, use your de-chlorination products!

No sludge build-up! When beneficial microorganisms are used regularly in ponds, about every 6 weeks or so all-year-round, the black, stinky, smelly sludge build up on the bottom of ponds does not seem to happen.

Good practice:Some good practices when dealing with ponds are:

  1. Calculate the gallons of water in your pond correctly. Use a calculator – The formula is: length x width x average depth x 7.5. This ensures that whatever you are adding to it is being added correctly to your pond.
  2. If you have heavy rains, double the dosage of whatever effective microorganisms you are use.
  3. Do not fertilize your pond plants. This also fertilizes the algae – and we do not want to be doing that!

Using beneficial microorganisms, at the recommended dosages, all-year-round (every 6 weeks or so) and keeping your pond dechlorinated whenever you add fresh water, will give you:

  • Happy fish
  • Thriving and beautiful plants
  • No green water
  • A clean, healthy, beautiful pond all-year-round!
